The FIRE Formula

FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ SWR

With the 4% rule: save 25× your annual spending. For $50k/yr spending, you need $1.25M.

Types of FIRE

  • Lean FIRE – Minimal lifestyle, lower number
  • Regular FIRE – Comfortable retirement
  • Fat FIRE – Luxurious retirement, 3–3.5% SWR
  • Coast FIRE – Save enough to coast to retirement

The biggest lever for reaching FIRE faster is your savings rate — not your income.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your FIRE number is the total amount of invested assets needed to cover your living expenses indefinitely. It is typically calculated as 25× your annual expenses, based on the 4% safe withdrawal rate rule.

The 4% rule, from the Trinity Study, states that you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually and it will last 30+ years in most historical market scenarios. So your target savings = annual expenses ÷ 0.04.

It depends on your savings rate, investment returns, and current savings. Higher savings rates dramatically reduce time to FIRE — going from a 10% to 50% savings rate can cut decades off your timeline.
